Missing your renewal date by even a single day can have consequences that far outweigh the cost of the premium itself.
30 Days to Pay Without Losing Continuity
IRDAI requires all health insurers to provide a grace period of 30 days for annual premium policies. During this grace period, you can pay your renewal premium and maintain continuity of all benefits. However, you are typically NOT covered during the grace period — hospitalisation before paying the overdue premium will not be covered.
Break in Policy — The Consequences
If you miss the grace period and your policy lapses, you have a break in policy. All accumulated waiting period credits are lost, your NCB resets to zero, your moratorium period clock resets, and the new policy is treated as fresh from day one. The new insurer also has the right to conduct fresh underwriting.
Break-In Policy Restoration
Some insurers offer break-in policy restoration — reinstating a lapsed policy with continuity benefits, subject to medical underwriting and payment of outstanding premium plus a reinstatement fee. Contact your insurer immediately after realising the lapse. Extended lapses beyond 90 days are typically treated as new policies.
